BAKER ARTIST AWARDSThe fresh and fun exhibition featuring the finalists for the 2009 Sondheim Award opened last weekend at the Baltimore Museum of Art, and it's very much worth checking out, but only a few days remain to see the 10 artists featured as part of the inaugural Baker Artist Awards. This exhibition--featuring John Ruppert, Hadieh Shafie, Becky Alprin, Milana Braslavsky, Sarah House, Adam Hopkins, Rob Levit, former City Paper staffer Jim Lucio, and Vincent Thomas--ends June 28, although you can still catch award-winner Carl Grubbs July 25 when he performs as part of the Jazz in the Sculpture Garden concert series.
THINKING BIG The Creative Alliance at the Patterson's annual Big Show is when the East Baltimore community-arts hub opens its gallery walls to its members to hang whatever they'd like. It typically produces an inconsistently overwhelming selection of works--nearly 200 of them, across all media and sizes and ideas--but as an exercise in community celebration, it's hard to beat. The show opens June 26 from 7-10 p.m. with a reception featuring the Dixieland-inspired big band jazz of Sac au Lait. The show runs through July 25.
