THE BIG SHOW The American Visionary Art Museum's latest mega-exhibition, Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness, opens Oct. 3; the preview party takes place Oct. 2 from 7-10 p.m.

FREE STUDIO SPACE The deadline for the C. Sylvia and Eddie C. Brown Studio at the Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower Competition 2009--which awards a visual artist free studio space in the downtown architectural landmark for a period of two years--is coming up. Applicants should submit a CD of their works, résumé, and $25 application fee by Oct. 9. More details can be found at bromoseltzertower.com/csylvia.cfm.

FREE FALL BALTIMORE The city's now-annual month of free cultural offerings officially starts Oct. 1, and as in years past the it includes a wide swathe of participating local institutions, including the Contemporary Museum (free admission through October), as well as a number of specific events, such as the Oct. 1 reception for the MICA Faculty Exhibition in the Decker, Meyerhoff, and Pinkard galleries from 5-7 p.m. Visit freefallbaltimore.com for a full list of events for the month.

Noetic Justice--the Charles Theatre Workers Union's group show featuring pieces that explore the science of thought and reasoning--opens Oct. 1 at the Charles Theatre with a reception from 7-9 p.m. Fletcher/Schwing: New Work--featuring Leslie Schwing and Greg Fletcher pieces that examine aspects of the environment, culture, and the mind--opens Oct. 2 at Gallery 1448. Adornment Adored--featuring jewelry made from ceramic, polymer clay, and PMC elements--opens Oct. 3 at Baltimore Clayworks with a reception from 6-8 p.m. Northernmost Southern Exposure--a group show featuring Kelley Bell, Sarada Conaway, Jackie Milad, Spoon Popkin, Ellie Pyle, and Ric Royer--opens Oct. 2 at the Metro Gallery with a reception at 7 p.m. An opening reception for the Art Gallery of Fells Point's North American Miniature Art Exhibition takes place Oct. 2 from 5-9 p.m. Artist/Gardener opens Oct. 1 at the Steven Scott Gallery.

CLOSING Sublime Structure closes Oct. 3 at the C. Grimaldis Gallery. Lashelle Bynum's Many Moods closes Oct. 3 at the Eubie Blake National Jazz Institute and Cultural Center. The group show REbirth/DEcay closes Oct. 2 at the Hexagon. Devon Fick's Pinwheels! closes Oct. 4 at the Load of Fun Studios.
