CLOSING Lou Joseph's Germ Theory solo show in the School 33's Members Gallery ends Oct. 10, and it's a beguiling, elusive show worth checking out. Joseph's pieces here look like acrylic on paper paintings, and the subject matter is vaguely post-apocalyptic or contemporary castoffs. What look like abandoned cars and trucks get stacked atop each other, or what could be an SUV is upturned, a lifeless tire pointing upward. What makes them so arresting is that Joseph paints them all in jarring shades of matte black, grey, and white, using a vocabulary that feels like camouflage pattern for hiding in a world of barren concrete, metal, and other man-made debris. Some scenes could be desolate landscapes, but their rendering in this palette makes them feel even more fugitive. Another piece looks like it could be a camp of tents--and the overall attitude here makes you wonder if the pathogen here is human in nature. Also closing: The MICA Faculty Exhibitions closes Oct. 11 in campus galleries.
