Murders this Year: 110

6:46 a.m. John Sandy, a 73-year-old Caucasian man, died nearly three months after being severely beaten in Hampden. Sandy, a taxi driver, got off work at about 4 a.m. April 18. He parked his car in the 3500 block of Elm Avenue, just off 36th Street. He was walking the block and half to his house when someone came up behind him and hit him with a tire iron. His attacker hit him numerous times, continuing even when Sandy fell to the ground. The attacker also stomped on Sandy's hand, breaking several bones. Sandy was taken to a local hospital where he underwent several surgeries and was in a coma for a period of time. He was, however, able to identify the man who beat him, alleging that it was Bobby Wisner, a 29-year-old Caucasian man, before he died. Wisner was arrested in June and charged with attempted murder and assault.

Saturday, July 17

12:01 a.m. Javon Perry, a 27-year-old African-American man from Washington, D.C., was shot in the head in the 3800 block of Park Heights Avenue. He died at a nearby hospital less than a half hour later.

Allen Banks, a 29-year-old African-American man, was convicted of murder on July 13. Collin Mazyck, a 24-year-old African-American man, was shot to death in the 2700 block of Tivoly Avenue on Jan. 17, 2008. A witness identified Banks as the shooter, but Banks claimed he was recording music at the time. Police analyzed the studio equipment and determined that no music was recorded near the time of the murder.

On July 16, Dwayne Thompson, a 36-year-old African-American man, was located in Miami and arrested for a Baltimore homicide. Thompson allegedly shot and killed Alvin Martin, a 28-year-old African-American man, on May 30 in the 2100 block of Ramsay Street in Carrollton Ridge.
