Why Homeless Men Seek Shelter From the Rain

By Kevin C. Thornton | Posted 9/9/1998

For the same reason squirrels stop in the
middle of the road, skittering to the safety
of the edge
just before they're crushed flat.

It's because their mother will always say,
"Come in, you'll catch your death of cold,"
and no amount of argument will quiet her.

It's because children put on shows
to prove to people with umbrellas they are
still smart enough to get in out of the rain

But mostly it's because beneath their coats
they hope that one day they will be dry
and far away from the cold raindrops of our avoidance.
