Face it, beer geeks--the microbrew revolution is over. Not that the mid-'90s explosion in craft brewing wasn't a fine thing, opening up new vistas in quaffing and freeing discerning thirsts from the tyranny of Coors and Bud. We can get Sierra Nevada Pale Ale almost anywhere, and for that we are truly grateful. But not all microbrews are created equal, and the same goes for their increasingly ubiquitous cousins, the brewpubs. When the floodgates opened, a lot of uninspired, same-tasting IPAs and brown ales sloshed through.

We love the Brewer's Art because it follows the brewpub road less traveled. Instead of the usual sudsy suspects, it produces a small coterie of unique Belgian-style beers, led by the luxurious Resurrection Ale and the loop-knocking Ozzy. Instead of the usual burgers-and-ESPN ambiance, the BA offers an eclectic, ever-changing menu and a choice of atmospheric options: hip/loud/smoky in the shadowy basement, plush/conversational in the upstairs foyer, or hey-look-at-me in the main bar, with its wall-length window overlooking Charles Street. The Brewer's Art is Baltimore's best brewpub because it has the best brew and the best pub.
