Best Middle Eastern Restaurant

The Helmand

806 N. Charles St., (410) 752-0311, www.helmand.com

Posted 9/21/2005

We can’t stop singing the praises of this Afghan establishment. They have taken the leek where no leek has dared to go before with their vegetarian aushak and bowlawni. For those new to this international cuisine, we recommend the lamb kebabs—savory, tender lamb served with aromatic rice pillau. The restaurant’s candlelit and muted atmosphere gives it the feel of a swanky eatery with exorbitant prices, but the Helmand remains so reasonably priced that it is a mainstay restaurant for impressing dates or treating friends without vacuuming the cash out of your wallet.
