Best Tapas/Small Plates
Kali’s Court Mezze
1606 Thames St., (410) 563-7600
It’s odd that as Baltimore’s culinary landscape expands the size of its plates seems to shrink. Still, we’re not complaining. As far as we’re concerned, it’s the perfect way to eat—an entire meal of appetizers. We like Tapas Teatro but not the snooty attitude or the fact that the food is so garlic-rich you’ll smell like it for days. Pazo is also a favorite, as evidenced by their Best New Restaurant nod, but sometimes going there feels a bit intense, leaving us wondering if we’re pretty enough to eat there. So, when we want to stack those tiny little plates high and fill our tummies with bite-size treats, we head to Kali’s Court Mezze. It has an elegant upscale décor with a laid-back, pull-up-a-chair vibe. And its selection of Mediterranean delicacies is excellent, with 16 seafood dishes, including shark fritters, three kinds of oysters, and tarama dip, so creamy and filled with fishy goodness we’d like to bathe in it. There are also more than 20 veggie options (ranging in price from $2.95 to $5.50) like goat cheese-stuffed roasted peppers, spinach fritters, and stuffed grape leaves. Damn, we’re making ourselves hungry. You get the idea—little plates filled with big flavors that allow you to customize your meal so it’s as affordable or decadent as your mood. Got it? Good. We’re going to go get some.
