Best Club Music Producer
Blaq Starr
Though it’d be easy to give the award to hard-working veterans such as Rod Lee and DJ Technics every year, Baltimore club music is equally driven by the work of younger, less-established producers, and no name stood out from the pack this year more than Blaq Starr (although many DJs still spell it “Blackstar” on their mixes). With tracks such as “Tote It” and the most-requested smash, “Get My Gun,” Blaq Starr replaced the macho shouts typical of club music with eerie singsong vocals. And in “Face Down” by Bossman’s N.E.K. crew, Blaq Starr has produced the all too rare club/hip-hop fusion that actually keeps the beat at 130 bpms and made the MCs rap faster so that club DJs can still spin it.
