Best Cheap Drink

Pikesville Rye, soda back

Mount Royal Tavern, 1204 W. Mount Royal Ave., (410) 669-6686

Posted 9/21/2005

Recommended for afternoon drinking. For two bucks and a quarter you can get a heavy pour of sweet “Maryland formula” Pikesville Rye whiskey (now manufactured in Kentucky) and a short glass of soda water on the rocks, with a lime twist. Take two preparatory sips of soda, leaving about three inches of clearance in the glass. Upend the Pikesville into the soda. Stir. Yeah, this is a mixer-heavy cocktail, but Pikesville ain’t “the quality”; it improves with dilution. Lean back and watch the MICA kids fight it out with the red-eyed regulars for control over the Tavern’s identity. Art school or old school, we don’t know of any other bar in Bar-timore that sells Pikesville so cheap—or with such a generous hand.
