Best Art Gallery

Sub-Basement Artist Studios

Michael Northrup
BEST ART GALLERY: Sub-Basement Artist Studios

118 N. Howard St., (410) 659-6950, www.sbastudios.com

Posted 9/21/2005

The gallery space alone at Jeffrey Kent’s Sub-basement Artist Studios blows many other galleries out of the water, its available square footage approaching that of a small museum. But it’s the creative use of this space and the overall high quality of the artists shown that separates Sub-basement from the rest. From the one-man shows (Larry Scott’s bold Evolution of Depression, Jeffrey Kent’s sly Art Instead, and Don Griffin’s emotionally intelligent Matrix) to its well-thought-out group shows (White on White, the recent With Your Eyes Closed?), Sub-basement displays a refreshingly restless spirit, unwilling to settle into anything remotely resembling a comfort zone and consistently emphasizing works that grab the eye, engage the brain, and sometimes even rattle the nerves.
