Best Bar, Mount Vernon/Midtown

Dougherty's Irish Pub

223 W. Chase St., (410) 752-4059

Posted 9/17/2003

Other Mount Vernon watering holes can have their DJs, their more-potent potables, their stylish clientele, and their too-cramped-to-move happy hours. Dougherty's doesn't bother messing with the basic bar format that's been working for, oh, who knows how long. With a nice but not extravagant selection of bottled beer and draughts--available by pint or pitcher--some obscenely affordable bar food, and a neighborhood hang vibe with some pool tables in the back, Dougherty's radiates the sort of no-muss ambiance that makes for great gatherings with friends or bellying up solo and finding out who's sitting next to you after getting well into your cups. And being slightly off Mount Vernon's main North Charles Street artery means you'll be chilling with various art-school habitués, neighborhood worker bees, a rotating cast of regulars, and the occasional gaggle of ornery writer-types who get more convivial as the clock winds ever onward.
