Best New Restaurant
Salt
Let's define terms. What we're praising Salt for is having a vision and sticking to it. We can tell that well-traveled chef/co-owner Jason Ambrose has been thinking about what he wanted his restaurant to be: a place where people feel good being out with each other, where the food gives pleasure and flavor without calling too much attention to itself. We appreciate having the door held open for us when we walk up, we love the spicy wines they've been serving in their opening summer season, and we've had lots of fun playing with the expressive menu--a sugarcane-skewered pork loin and a brimming bowlful of lamb stroganoff leap to mind. We'll like Salt even better in a few years, when the excitement and attention wear off and it becomes the ideal neighborhood tavern it was designed to be.
