Happy Day Diner

8302 Pulaski Highway, Rosedale, (410) 687-2129, www.happydaydiner.com

Posted 9/20/2006

Most 24-hour diners are created equal, but the Happy Day Diner boasts not only the usual hefty menu full of satisfying diner fare but also a 1950s flair all its own. Upon arrival, patrons bask in the glow of Happy Day's giant rooftop Elvis sculpture, striking the midgyration pose he was so famous for. It has an easy-to-manipulate crane machine overstuffed with goofy stuffed animals that provides the perfect entertainment for the kids--or adults suffering from a drunken version of Peter Pan syndrome. For the adults, Happy Day livens up on Saturday nights when it welcomes the Route 40 CruZers, who bring their classic cars to the parking lot for a little auto show and tell, entertaining patrons and Happy's quirky waitstaff alike. And then there's the food--we're always tempted to stuff our beer bellies full of Monte Cristo goodness, but then we're reminded by Elvis to watch out for overindulgence: The King didn't look that good forever, you know.
