Best Middle Eastern Restaurant

The Helmand

806 N. Charles St., (410) 752-0311, www.helmand.com

Posted 9/20/2006

You know what we love? Going out to a nice casual yet elegant restaurant, having a tasty meal in a warm atmosphere, and leaving with some actual money left over in our thrifty little pockets. The Helmand serves up awesome Afghan dishes like chopendez (a char-grilled beef tenderloin marinated in fresh garlic and onions and served with vegetables and pallow) and korma mahi (sea bass stewed in ginger and mint). In addition to hefty portions of these meat lovers' delights, you can also order a whole slew of vegetarian dishes, such as bell peppers stuffed with vegetables, beans, and wild rice simmered in sun-dried tomato and rhubarb sauce. The Helmand combines excellent food, a comfortable atmosphere, and good service, all within walking distance of Mount Vernon's museums and bars--places you can actually afford to visit, since your dinner at the Helmand won't cost you an arm and a leg.
