Best Mysterious Closure of a Local Landmark

A handwritten sign was the only announcement: closed. The Big Sky Bread Co. in Roland Park survived a two-alarm fire in 2002 but this summer succumbed to the taxman--or so the rumors go. No more yeasty bread. No more sweet, crunchy granola. And owner Dave Pless seems to be missing in action--perhaps baking bread in Lancaster, Pa.? That's what some Roland Park retailers have heard.

Miss Shirley's owner Eddie Dopkin announced in August that the popular breakfast and lunch joint will move across the street into the old bakery space this fall. An Italian restaurant is planned for Miss Shirley's current digs.
