Best Bar for Nonsmokers

Golden West Café

1105 W. 36th St., (410) 889-8891, www.goldenwestcafe.com

Posted 9/20/2006

While we dread the inevitable day when smoking is banned in all Baltimore bars, our lungs (and jeans) thank those drinkeries that forbid smoking. And most of all we thank Golden West for its long, long bar in back. GW's bar doesn't feel like a nonsmoking bar. The air may be clean, but sitting at the bar aren't health freaks and anti-smoking crazies but the same mix of hipsters and uptown tourists found at any other gentrified Hampden bar. Generous pours , affordable drinks, a nice selection of beer and wine, good tunes, antlers (!), and, best of all, the availability of most of Golden West's superb menu of Southwestern and Asian specialties (plus half-price burgers Mondays and house-made pizza Saturdays). We'll see you there; just don't tell anyone we're re-wearing our shirt the next day.
