Best Upscale Bar

Tusk Lounge

Brass Elephant, 924 N. Charles St., (410) 547-8485, www.brasselephant.com

Posted 9/20/2006

When you want to go out and have a few beers and a fist full of nachos or mozzarella sticks you can go to pretty much any bar. But when you want to feel a little more upper crust and chill in a place where you know people aren't going to be playing beer pong anywhere near you--and where you're not going to have to scream at your date in order for him or her to hear you--check out the Brass Elephant's Tusk Lounge. The historic restored rowhouse is romantic, elegant, and sophisticated without being pretentious. It feels like drinking at a museum, what with all the lovely art, wood walls, and candelabra. Enjoy the fancy bar snacks, like the heirloom tomato salad with blue crab guacamole, sea salt, and charred Vidalia vinaigrette, with your expertly shaken dirty martini. Surrounded by soft music and dim lighting, you'll feel like you should be wearing an evening gown or a monocle and top hat to have a drink here, but slacks are good enough. Unless you really want to wear a monocle or evening gown.
