Two words: Rebecca Goodman. Sure it's hard as hell to get an appointment, and we'd be subject to almost complete alienation if we missed one. Don't be late or the arteest can't perform her magic. But get your ass in the seat, and it's good times. The woman doesn't hassle us when we cut our own bangs, or when we say, "I wanna look like Mackenzie Phillips when she sported the shag on One Day at a Time." Long after you leave Balance and the yummy smell washes out, people will ask where you got your hair cut. You won't want to tell them and risk adding another customer to the already two-month-long waiting list. But you'll tell them anyway because Goodman is worth sharing--she's got the sharpest shears in the city.
