Sound Garden

1616 Thames St., (410) 563-9011, www.cdjoint.com

Posted 9/18/2002

Neither the Sopranos or the Corleones have a lock on a local industry like this Fells Point music store does. In a way, its Best of Baltimore reign is less an indication of Sound Garden's overall quality than of the complete absence of competition. No other CD store, new or used, can equal Sound Garden's scope; with one or two CDs from every hip or soon-to-be act--from underground backpack rappers to laptop beat sculptors, from Canadian instrumental collectives to local avant skronkers, from free-jazz reissues to indie-pop punk--what Sound Garden lacks in depth it makes up for in breadth. If you read about it recently in Alternative Press, Spin, Soma, CMJ, The Wire, or Terrorizer, chances are you can find it here. Of course, maybe we're fickle because we just can't escape it: Every time we try to get out without spending some coin, it keeps pulling us back in.
