Paradox
1310 Russell St., (410) 837-9110, www.thedox.com
We don't know what you look for in a dance club, but we like ours pretty straightforward. Paradox sticks to the basics--ample space on the floor, a variety of DJs cutting a wide range of styles, and a no-bullshit attitude. Gay, straight, black, white, up-to-the-second hipster or yuppie weekend warriors trying not to scuff their Kenneth Coles, Paradox unites almost as many colors as Benetton. It also has all the bells and whistles--two big rooms, bars offering everything from gin gimlets to fruit juices, and those neat lights, smoke accents, and smooth design surfaces that make you feel like you've just stepped into some French slapstick action flick--you know, as if Tchéky Karyo was going to glide in all smooth at any moment and have a leer around until he spotted the right unfortunate soul to harass. It never happens, but it wouldn't be out of place in Paradox's nouveau/retro-something vibe.
