Ethiopian cuisine can be a little daunting for the uninitiated. While dining in an Ethiopian restaurant it's not uncommon to see people cautiously looking around to see how other diners are approaching their food, or to overhear from a nearby table, "Are you supposed to eat that?" But once you figure it out, you'll be hooked, and Dukem on Maryland Avenue will become your home away from home. The food is delicious and filling, and they provide ample options for both vegetarians and meat-eaters. The owners are friendly and outgoing and the service is great, similar to its popular sister restaurant on U Street in Washington. One word of advice: Be prepared when you go upstairs to make the split-second "is it a table or a chair?" decision. Choose wisely--we've seen that one go badly.
