Best Place to Get a Sandwich
Café Mocha
859 N. Howard St., (410) 669-7303
There's a reason we're not giving Café Mocha Best Place to Sit Down and Eat a Sandwich. It's not that the dining room isn't lovely. With its warm tones and comfortable seating, it certainly is. It's just that owner Kader Camara makes each order himself, and you can't rush the artistry of the man we call "the Sandwich King." So it can take a bit more time to eat-in than we have to spend on lunch. So we recommend that you do as we do: Memorize the menu and call ahead--way ahead--for takeout. For your tenacity, you are rewarded with truly remarkable sandwiches--the mustardy chicken salad and any of the paninis rank among our favorites--on some of the crunchiest and most flavorful bread in town. The sandwiches aren't huge, but they're reasonably priced and surprisingly filling, and Camara has an eye for detail. For example, the tomatoes he serves are always ripe and delicious, never hard or green. Sure, it might take a while to get a sandwich at Café Mocha, but it's always well worth the wait.
