Best Gay Bar That's Not a Gay Bar
The Brewer's Art
It's not like anyone's singing show tunes, but it sure is gay at the Brewer's Art sometimes. We're pretty sure the bears that lumber in here do so because it's below ground, like a cave. But nonhairy, slim-hipped gays show up here, too, just because it's a better place to drink and hang out than the gay bars just up the block. A theory: Baltimore is the only major city in America in which the straight men are hotter than the gays. And cooler and nicer. And flirtier. And since no one hooks up anymore in gay bars anyway (what with the internet and all), why not hang out instead where there's at least better junk to look at? And then there's this: Bartender Karma Ward (sister of City Paper calendar editor Wendy Ward), with her sharp tongue and impeccable rear end, has evolved, impressively, into something of a local gay icon--kind of a cross between Parker Posey and Chloe Sevigny. Girl's fierce.
