Baltimore Living
Best Bar for Nonsmokers
Bertha's
734 S. Broadway, (410) 327-5795, www.berthas.com
If you want guaranteed no-smoking for the months that remain before the smoking ban hits everywhere, plus good beer and friendly faces, drink at Bertha's. With 10 beers on tap ($4.20 a pint, not for bargain hunters) and a full menu and its famous mussels, Bertha's satisfies our craving for a dark-paneled, red-lit smoke-free hangout that's lively, real, and weird--the kind of place where the bartender talks up the previous night's PBS special on pet chickens. Enjoy the live music most nights, or come in the dead heat of the afternoon, sit at the faded bar, and read the modified Bertha's bumper stickers ("Eat Tiger's Wood," etc.). Even the urinal is delightfully butt-free.
