Downtown's Current Gallery would win this category for its multipurpose zeal alone if we wanted to throw its music shows and other sundry performance events into the mix. But it's the Current's curatorial verve that keeps us coming back for more--whether it be the so-called maximalist pairing of Ben Furgal and Jimmy Joe Roche or the insouciant Device show of casual, candid digital photography. Not all of it always works--or is even that interesting--but that's what makes Current so vital. The curatorial team isn't afraid--of silliness, of being impolite, of being serious about lowbrow mindedness, of total failure--a cliff's-edge daring so needed in Baltimore's, and, honestly, any city's art community to prevent it from becoming too stiff, staid, or satisfied. Here's to trying anything once--perhaps twice just to make sure.
