Best Lake Trout

The Roost

5281 Reisterstown Road, (410) 578-0232,

Posted 9/17/2008

Yeah, sure, we go to the Roost for the collard greens, the macaroni and cheese, the peach cobbler, the bean pie, the chicken, the ribs, and the candied sweet potatoes, but mostly we go there for those two big beautiful words up there on the sign: lake trout. And we're not alone. Since 1974 it's been all about the lake, baby, tender flaky fish with that signature light, salty, secret-recipe batter coating--not greasy, heavy, or soggy, just right--and it's a huge, satisfying net-full of a serving for not a lot of money. We recommend you wash it down with a half and half, also known as an "Arnold Palmer" or "Michael Jackson" on the Roost's star (and joke)-studded wall menu that makes for perfect time-killing reading while you're waiting to eat your lake trout with some hot sauce. Perfect.
