Best Middle Eastern Restaurant

Orchard Market and Café

8815 Orchard Tree Lane, Towson, (410) 339-7700, www.orchardmarketandcafe.com

Posted 9/17/2008

Just as the generic term "Mexican food" hardly covers the entire variety of regional Central and South American cuisines now available in Baltimore, "Middle Eastern" doesn't quite do justice to the Orchard Market and Café. Yes, this tucked-away Towson gem serves grilled meat, something like baba ganouj, and yogurt and cucumber salad, but it is more properly a Persian restaurant, with a lively and thoughtful menu of iterations of Persian classics, such as chicken or duck in fesenjune, or walnut-pomegranate sauce. Despite its strip-mall exterior, Orchard Market's small, calm dining room is an excellent date setting, and the sumptuous cuisine makes for good eating on any occasion. And if you must stick with a kebab-type item, the koobideh here has no equal, locally.
