Best Neighborhood Bar

Backstretch Saloon

Frank Klein

1301 W. Old Cold Spring Lane, (410) 889-3003

Posted 9/17/2008

Twice we've been offered pizza by carry-out box-wielding patrons while drinking $1.25 Bud and Bud Light drafts in iced--like, beer slushy iced--glass mugs at the Backstretch in Medfield. Twice, and we aren't even regulars. We went after the Virgin Fest two years back and talked to a shirtless guy in his 70s who had spent the afternoon on the fields of Pimlico, too. We went there after seeing Foreigner at the fair and once after we got off the light rail from the airport. See, it's a special-occasion place--with televisions bookending the short wood bar two feet from the door in the basement of a corner rowhouse behind a gas station--when special occasions are defined by cold drinks in the "Land of Pleasant Living." Easy to please? Sure, but come November, we know where we'll be sitting election night--sometimes you gotta give Jon Stewart and all that a rest and just be neighborly.
