Some of even our favorite, divey, allegedly music-loving watering spots have switched over to the wretched digital jukebox--Kitty Kat Bar, we're looking at you--and it pains the ears. Sure, much of the Fells barhopping crowd that frequents the spots around Friends could care less if the jukebox contents are dictated by remote forces more likely to have degrees in marketing on their résumés than record store stints, but this midsize bar just off the main Broadway drag keeps it proper--Clutch, Pixies, and a well-calculated selection of indie-centric crowd pleasers to keep the d-bags and dorm hippies at bay. Oh, and the best part: It's free.
