Best Lesbian Bar

Sappho's, the self-billed "exclusive ladies' lounge" that occupies what was once a low-key piano bar above the sprawling Grand Central kingdom in Mount Vernon, vaults to the top of our affections this year because it so stylishly fills two niches. For starters, it's a gal-centric space set in the throbbing heart of the neighborhood's club district. (No dis meant to the venerable Coconuts Café, located on the perimeter of Mount Vernon, but walking there from where the rest of the action is late at night can be a bit scary.) For enders, it's a lounge, something the ladies in this town have needed for years. Picture comfy sofas and overstuffed chairs, mood lighting, an outdoor deck--and no wet T-shirt contests or Ravens games on a big screen. (Though, if you're feeling boisterous, there's karaoke on Thursdays. And, in compliance with federal statutes governing lesbian bars, there's a pool table.) On Fridays and Saturdays, a DJ gets the small dance floor fired up--and only guys need to pay the $6 cover.
