True to the times, we first heard that the Sun was hastily laying off 60 editorial employees from Twitter. We quickly went to the web for more. No two bloggers posted with more urgency and detail about the sweeping April layoffs than DCRTV's Dave Hughes and The Real Muck's David Ettlin, a former Sun editor and reporter. Hughes' blog gave us the numbers--a quarter of the newsroom, 15 editors--while Ettlin made the event tangible with accounts from former colleagues. We learned of sports writer Rick Maese, who found out he'd been laid off while covering a story; editorial assistant Ellie Baublitz who was let go after 22 years; and deputy opinion editor Larry Williams and wife, Marcia Myers--he left, she stayed. These blogs made the exodus more about the people than just an institution, which made this latest round of layoffs all the more profound.
