Baltimore artists are rarely flush, but with the economic downturn, many grant programs and would-be art buyers scaled down, leaving those artists that depend on grants and a few sales in trouble. Fortunately--both for artists and the city--the Kresge Foundation is piloting a $200,000 grant program for this year and next that gives small grants to artists to do community-based projects. Individual grants are capped at $10,000, meaning that over two years at least 20 projects, and possibly five times that many, will take place that otherwise may have never happened. While this money won't make up for the hits the arts have taken in Baltimore over the past year, every bit helps.
