Sometimes, foreign movie directors can offer a more illuminating take on America than our home-grown ones; they choose to see different things in what we see everyday. By the same token, sometimes a photographer's view of your familiar world can put it in a different perspective. The four photographers spotlighted here--Elizabeth Barbush, Michela Caudill, Ellis Marsalis III, and Ken Royster--all look through their viewfinders and see something different in the East Baltimore neighborhoods that make up this exhibition. And by grouping them with archival photography that goes back, 20, 30, and even 50 years, East Side Stories created a complex, idiosyncratic view of our own backyard.
