Used to be that we never gave Borderline Bar and Grill its due--it's located in an out-of-the-way location off Washington Boulevard in Southwest Baltimore, so we drove by it all the time without a thought. But earlier this year, we stopped in for a beer and found that it has all the qualities we generally look for in a good neighborhood hangout: cold beer, cheap food, friendly staff, comfortable atmosphere, no pretensions, no bullshit. The bar stools feel lived in (or on, we guess), the stained-glass chandeliers make the room feel quirky but homey, and in addition to the usual light beer swill, Borderline keeps Budweiser's American Ale on tap. Generic enough to feel comfortable, unique enough to have a bit of character--that's the epitome of a good neighborhood bar.
