Hoehn's Bakery

400 S. Conkling St., (410) 675-2884, hoehnsbakery.com

Posted 9/16/2009

Hoehn's makes the stuff you find only in small corners of old Baltimore: glossy slabs of peach cake, cinnamon-dusted smearcase cake, jam tarts, marshmallow donuts garnished with toasted coconut known as "haystacks," all wrapped up in white cardboard boxes tied with red and white twine. Established by German immigrant William Hoehn, and now run by his granddaughter, Sharon Hooper, and her cousin, Louis Sahlender, the bakery has been serving Highlandtown since 1927 using the same ancient brick oven and most of William and his son, the late Frederick Hoehn's, recipes.
