Best New-School Old-School Seafood

Mama's on the Half Shell

2901 O'Donnell St., (410) 276-3160

Posted 9/16/2009

This Canton seafood restaurant housed in a converted corner rowhouse feels like an oyster bar in some classic hotel--you'd never guess it's only five years old. Dark wood walls contrast with huge flower-boxed windows looking out over the square and street, the more formal upstairs offers plenty of solid wood tables for larger parties, and the long, friendly bar on the ground floor features a few big screens without creating a sports bar vibe--there are tables here, too. And the food is as tasty and unpretentious as the maritime art and paraphernalia isn't trite. Mama's caters to folks wanting their tasty, thoughtful, but simply prepared fish and oysters with a pint and no attitude, and does it with old-fashioned charm.
