Good old-time bakeries are an endangered species. The Woodlea is a stalwart amid the ever-dwindling sea of neighborhood bake shops, and we sincerely hope it never, ever goes away. We just feel better knowing there is always a place we can find the nostalgic treats of our youth--jelly turnovers, peach cake, schmeerkaase (a kind of German cheesecake)--that don't come from the conveyor belts of commercial bakers. To us, items such as these are Woodlea's most valuable currency, but we also appreciate the fluffy, warm-from-the-oven rolls, the assorted dainty cookies, the decadently sugary, gooey pastries, and the heartwarming sight of some or all of the above being gently tucked into taped-shut cardboard boxes.
