Best Italian Restaurant
La Scala
The genius of Italian cuisine lies in its simplicity: simple ingredients of impeccable freshness and quality, simply combined. La Scala's kitchen recognizes this crucial fact, and this upscale (but reasonably priced, for Little Italy) eatery does classic Italian and does it well. There's an outstanding veal piccata, for example, and intelligent renditions of pasta styles such as amatriciana and boscaiola. And when Chef Nino wants to step out, the specials menu offers some intriguing--and equally well-executed--options, like the best grilled Caesar salad we've ever sampled and a terrific grilled squid with seafood stuffing. The best of both worlds, food-wise, with good service and posh but relaxed ambiance thrown in. Who knew la dolce vita was only as far away as Eastern Avenue?
