Best Lesbian Bar
Coconuts Café
309 W. Madison St., (410) 383-6064
Choosing Baltimore's best lesbian bar means flipping a coin between the only two in town. Neither place serves a demographic that we fit into comfortably, but if you're looking for where the girls are, you're bound to find them in one of two places. Some years Port in a Storm is our bar of choice; this year, however, we choose Mount Vernon's Coconuts Café. This tropical-motif bar is usually filled with a preponderance of baby dykes, who can be quite cliquish. But the drinks are fairly cheap and Coconuts offers regular specials on everything from 25-cent chicken wings to free pool. Its kitchen serves tasty bar grub at reasonable prices, so you can fuel up before the heavy cruising starts. And there's a tiny dance floor where women can be found shimmying and checking out the action.
Next year there might be more competition in this category: An honorable mention goes to Fells Point's Bar Harbor. Although the crowd there is definitely heterogeneous, more and more lesbians seem to be making their way down there to listen to live music or just to have a friendly drink and play the bowling game.
