Best Crab House

Gabler's

2200 Perryman Road, Aberdeen, (410) 272-0626

Posted 9/15/1999

When determining Best of Baltimore winners, we don't always pick the best candidate for a category. Sometimes we save it for ourselves, especially if we want to be able to enjoy it in relative peace. This established Aberdeen crab house isn't exactly a secret, but we've been biting our tongues for years when it comes time to argue over the best of the best, for just such selfish reasons. Time to let the crab out of the pot. The Gabler family has owned and operated Gabler's for 61 years, and part of its considerable charm comes from its old-school feel. The restaurant is essentially a giant screened-in porch, with long tables lined up under windows offering a sweeping view of the nearby Bush River. The sea-walled waterfront, the green grass and gravel of the parking lot, the tall trees, and the summer-camp architecture of the compound give the place an idyllic feel that contrasts with the herd-'em-in-and-move-'em-out bustle of many urban crab joints--lingering along the riverbank provides many diners with a natural post-feed wind-down. The crabs? They're reliably meaty and well-spiced--we've never had a bad dozen there. (One caveat: You can't just drop in and expect to order up a dozen or two; reservations are recommended, particularly for weekends.) There's a token assortment of sides and alternate entrées, but crabs are obviously the main thing, and rightly so. If you need further convincing to make the drive to Aberdeen, we've got three words for you: location, location, location.
