Best Soups
The Kitchen
1065 S. Charles St. (Cross Street Market),, (410) 468-4477
Barry Rumsey doesn't spend much time these days at his Cross Street Market stand--presumably he's tied up with his restaurant, Bicycle, a few blocks away (see "Best New Restaurant")--but fortunately he still makes the fresh soups that are the mainstay of the Kitchen's rotating menu. Oh, there are nice wraps and sandwiches here too, but it's the silky shrimp bisque, piquant roasted corn and green chile, hearty tomato-lentil, or (if it's our lucky, lucky day) rich, velvety red-pepper bisque for which we make special trips to Cross Street. This is gourmet stuff, as easy to imagine in a bowl of bone china as one of black plastic, served with a hunk of smoky grilled bread and priced to move. Slurp.
