Caribbean Kitchen
218 N. Liberty St., (410) 837-2274
When you walk into this tiny downtown restaurant, you'll assume you've entered any old lunch counter. You'd be wrong. For nearly five years, Caribbean Kitchen has brought authentic Jamaican cooking to Baltimore's 9-to-5ers. Drop in at lunchtime and you'll see--the mix of Rastas, blue-collar workers, and suits is impressive. But not nearly so impressive as the food: The Kitchen has a wide-ranging menu that covers breakfast items, subs and sandwiches, and Caribbean cuisine worthy of Jah Himself. Dig into a jerk chicken so spicy your mouth and eyes will water. Savor the curried goat or the milder brown-stewed chicken; they're the best in town. Try a buttery-tasting vegetable rhoti with a side of sweet, golden-brown fried plantains. Or, if your craving leans to stateside fare, try the boneless lake-trout sandwich--it's always fresh, meaty, and flavorful. Wash it all down with a bracing ginger beer. There may be more and more options in Baltimore these days for those of us who love Caribbean food, but one thing hasn't changed: You'll find the best food at the Kitchen.
