Best Ice Cream Parlor
Sylvan Beach Café
7 W. Preston St., (410) 685-5752
How often do you get to eat ice cream for a good cause? And we're not talking some miniscule Ben & Jerry's "1 percent for peace" crap here--this café/ice cream parlor is run by a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing job skills and education to high school dropouts. Your giant waffle cone stuffed with, let's say, coffee-chocolate-chip ice cream and dripping hot fudge and whipped cream is philanthropy in action. Seriously, though, sunny, pleasant Sylvan Beach Café is a great place to grab breakfast muffins or bagels, refuel with a latte or chai, or chow down on some seriously good homemade ice cream. Particular faves are the afore-mentioned bittersweet coffee-chip, coconut-almond chip, banana-nut fudge, and (for those tormented souls who actually worry about such things) Sylvan Beach's scrumptious fat-free seasonal sorbets--the cantaloupe is to die for.
