Matthew's Pizza
3131 Eastern Ave., (410) 276-8755
We know a guy who always took his first dates to Matthews Pizza on Eastern Avenue in Highlandtown. If they didn't like the pizza, it was their last date. One day, he was double-dating and the three others in his party weren't too crazy about Matthews' fare. They left, he stayed-and ate all four pies. Today, 30 years later, that guy claims that was the best night of his life.
Matthews still serves up exactly the same pies it's been serving up for more than half a century. The plate-sized, deep dish delights are inconceivably tasty. There's nothing fancy-schmancy about Matthews' pies; the menu offers a mere seven choices, and four of those are simply different choices of cheese toppings. You can pick up your purchase or even buy frozen pizzas at Matthews, but the restaurant itself is worth the visit. Bring your own beer or wine if you wish and sit back and soak in the atmosphere. We can almost guarantee that on any given night you'll find two teenagers, making nervous small talk, doing the Matthew's Pizza taste test. Because Matthews is kind of Highlandtown's shack d'amour. One taste of the pie and you'll understand why.
