C. Grimaldis Gallery

523 N. Charles St., (410) 539-1080

Posted 9/13/2000

The C. Grimaldis Gallery has maintained its high standards for so many years that it's easy to take its excellence for granted. Still, it hosted so many strong shows this past year that attention must be paid. Among the artists whose work Grimaldis showcased were Sukey Bryan, whose abstracted paintings of ocean waves and lava flows are as energetic as his subjects; Karl Connolly, with enigmatic figurative paintings that dispense with his usual near-barren landscapes; Jon Isherwood, who has developed a distinctive stylistic vocabulary for his abstract sculpture; and painter Grace Hartigan, who turned to kabuki performers and other Asian figurative subjects for her most recent show. What really made the gallery stand out within the past year was its increasing interest in photography: Cubans Alberto Diaz Korda and Jose Figueroa provided culturally rich glimpses of their country; Baltimorean James DuSel pursued his devotion to shooting historic architecture; and another Baltimorean, City Paper contributor Christopher Myers, had a series of Eastern European photos.
