Best Liquor Store

Wells Discount Liquors

6310 York Rd., 435-2700

Posted 9/18/1996

The winner and still champeen. What separates this behemoth on the Baltimore County line from the run-of-the-mill booze boutique? Besides mind-boggling selection, Wells, more than any local liquor store we’ve patronized, encourages experimentation. There’s nowhere better for budding beer and wine geeks of modest means to expand their palates.

Getting tired of that cheap viognier you’ve been drinking but on too tight a budget to step up in class? Every few months Wells puts virtually its entire wine stock on sale—buy one bottle, get a second of the same stuff for half-price. And every week there’s an array of new micros, untried imports, and old reliables on sale for as low as $2.99 a six and, most delightfully, 99¢ or less for a 22-ounce bottle. (What better way to convince people you’re a high roller than to show up at a party swiggin’ from a big-ass bottle of Buffalo Bill’s Alimony Ale or Pete’s Wicked Winter?) We always exit with something we’ve never heard of or something we’ve been dying to try, and always with change in our pocket. Let us be clear—we like this place a lot.
