Best French Fries
Café Hon
1002 W. 36th St., 243-1230
Why do so many restaurants screw up the humble French fry? The search for that timeless marriage of potatoes and grease too often makes us feel as fussy and unsatisfied as Goldilocks: If restaurant fries aren’t too hard, they’re too soft; too thin or too thick; too roughhewn and drenched in fat, or too frighteningly uniform and flavorless. But Hampden’s Café Hon gets it right: Their shoestring taters bear the marks of a chef’s loving care, being obviously cut from fresh potatoes (and showing telltale strips of tater skin). They’re just the right mix of crunchy and mashy, great with ketchup, and even better when accompanied by a Hon hamburger, which is also among the city’s best.
