Best Cheap Grocery Store

Shoppers Food Warehouse

Southside Marketplace, 857 Fort Ave., (410) 727-1246, Web site

Posted 9/22/2004

Generally, the closest supermarket is the default place to purchase victuals, but those looking to save a lot of money would do well to spend the time and gas to get to Shoppers Food Warehouse in South Baltimore. The same boxed, shrink-wrapped, and canned items are available for purchase at SFW as at other groceries, but at significant savings—many items are about 50 cents to a buck cheaper than at other stores, which may not seem like a lot, but it adds up to a significant amount of money at the checkout line. Much as we love to get our groceries on the cheap at SFW, there is one caveat to shopping here: It’s a good idea to buy your fresh vegetables and meat in small quantities and consume within a day or two after bringing them home. They’re not always the freshest of the fresh.
