Smile, Hon, You’re in Baltimore
Edited by William P. Tandy, published by Eight Stone Press, P.O. Box 963, Havre de Grace, MD 21078
If you can get past the dorky, excessively punctuated title, Eight Stone Press’ Smile, Hon, You’re in Baltimore! is surprisingly fascinating, consistently absurd, and often weird as hell. Featuring a rotating cast of local contributors (including zinester Davida Gypsy Breier, who claimed this category last year, and Ed Stankhouse Jr., who runs Pinkie’s Adult Boutique), the fifth and most recent issue of SHYIB examines whether or not Mayor Martin O’Malley signed an online petition to get ex-Pogues singer Shane MacGowan to fire his manager, explores what happens when you talk back to a mugger, and delves into the little-known seedy underbelly of Bolton Hill, where schoolchildren pelt residents with rocks and steal batches of homemade vegan chili. Written in an unpretentious, conversational style and full of random photos taken around town, SHYIB is Baltimore at its bizarre best.
